Summary
Recluse author Roland Heinz of Pipe, Wisconsin decides to grant a rare interview to a magazine edited by his friend, but specifies the interviewer, Molly Costello from Boston. As the interview begins to unspool and Roland's health deteriorates, he tells of his previous marriage and the havoc wrought to it by alcoholism, and of his rise to becoming an acclaimed author. We learn along the way how books can change the lives of people who take time to read them. The Ledge is also a look into the culture and mores of South Central Wisconsin, particularly the Holyland area
